COVID-19 Update

UDPATED  12:55 PM 4/27/2021

Dear Staff, Students, and Parents/Guardians,

I am writing to inform you that five individuals in our Drury High School community have tested positive for COVID-19. These individuals were tested independently, and School Nurse Leader Lauren Gage was notified on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 regarding their positive test status. Since they have not been in school since Thursday, April 15th, no one in school would be identified as a primary contact through contact tracing. Close contacts would have occurred outside of school and in the community. Students and staff who have had close contact with the individuals need to begin quarantine effective immediately. Close contact is defined as proximity of less than 6 feet of physical distance for more than fifteen minutes. These students and staff can tentatively return to school for in-person learning on May 3, 2021.

Though we cannot provide specific information about the individuals who tested positive, North Adams Public Schools has implemented our protocols for notification, disinfection, and quarantine for affected staff and students. Contact tracing has been conducted by School Nurse Leader Lauren Gage and she is assured that there is no possible exposure within the schools due to these cases. We are also following all Department of Health protocols, including collaborating with our local board of health to complete contact tracing. Additionally, we are asking those parents whose students are tested for COVID-19 at their health care provider’s office or at the Stop the Spread Center located at 97 Church Street, North Adams to please report the results to the school nurse.

If your child traveled to another state during the recent April school vacation, the school district is following the guidance of the state travel advisory, and as such, in lieu of a 10 day quarantine, is requiring a negative COVID-19 test result to return to school. This information, provided below, can be found in detail on the state website.

As of Monday, March 22, all visitors entering Massachusetts, including returning residents, are advised to quarantine for 10 days upon their arrival.  Travelers in the following categories are exempt from this quarantine advisory:

  • Travelers who have received a negative COVID-19 result on a test administered not more than 72 hours prior to their arrival in Massachusetts.  Travelers may also test out of the quarantine advisory after arrival in Massachusetts, as long as they quarantine until receiving a negative test result.

  • Anyone who is entering Massachusetts for fewer than 24 hours

  • Anyone who is returning to Massachusetts after being out of the State for fewer than 24 hours

  • Workers who enter Massachusetts to perform critical infrastructure functions (as specified by the Federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) during required commuting to or from work and while at work.

  • Travelers who are fully vaccinated (i.e. who have received two doses of either the Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines OR who have received a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, 14 days or more ago) and who do not have symptoms.

  • All travelers are encouraged to consult and follow the CDC’s guidelines and requirements for travel.”

The district’s ongoing pooled testing program continues to assist us in determining if there is potential of community transmission of COVID-19.

If you would like your student to be tested via our pooled testing program, please complete a consent form. To complete the Pooled Testing Consent Form, go to: https://www.napsk12.org/page/pooledcovid19testing. If you have any questions about the pooled testing program, please email the school nurse leader Lauren Gage at lgage@napsk12.org.

We will continue to be vigilant in adhering to all of the protocols that have been put in place in an effort to continue in-person learning. We are also continuing to provide remote learning for all students required to quarantine at home. We are committed to continuous communication with, and support of, our families. If there is additional transmission as a result of this case or a separate case, we will send out another message immediately. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Barbara Malkas, Ed.D.

Superintendent of North Adams Public Schools
